How we counted
- High equity: the owner holds an estimated 60% or more of the property's value. Low equity: 20% or less. Equity is the estimated value less the estimated balance of the loans recorded against it.
- Free and clear: no mortgage or other lien is recorded. Adjustable-rate mortgage: the recorded mortgage has an adjustable rate.
- New York is left out of the ratios and the adjustable-rate count. Its property records leave out too much of what these numbers need to compare fairly with the other cities.
- The counts come from DealMachine's property search on August 18, 2026, the same counts DealMachine's city search pages show for each kind of property.
- Each city is the city itself, as its boundary appears in DealMachine data, not its metro area.
- DealMachine data is built from county property records, deed and mortgage records and other public records, matched to each property and updated as the records change.
- Counts are exact. Shares and ratios are rounded to one decimal place.
